(And many more…there’s a lot of jails and prisons in nyc)

Jails are local, short-term holding facilities for people awaiting trial or serving sentences of less than a year, while prisons are state or federally run, long-term institutions for people convicted of serious crimes (felonies) with sentences of more than one yearJails are typically managed by county or city governments and offer fewer amenities

While all states except Maine and Vermont restrict voting rights for felons while they are incarcerated, laws differ on whether those rights are restored automatically after release
. In at least 10 states, an ex-con can lose their voting rights indefinitely or must petition to have them restored.
States that require a petition for voting rights restoration
These states do not automatically restore voting rights upon release from prison, requiring ex-felons to apply for a pardon or to the parole board.
  • Alabama: Individuals must petition for a Certificate of Eligibility to Vote (CEV), and may be required to pay all court-ordered fines, fees, and restitution.
  • Arizona: First-time, non-violent offenders have rights automatically restored upon completion of their sentence. Others must petition a court, and may be required to pay all fines and fees.
  • Delaware: Restoration is dependent on the specific felony conviction. Rights are automatically restored for most convictions, but an individual must apply to the Board of Pardons for restoration following certain convictions like murder or a felony involving an election.
  • Florida: Following the passage of Amendment 4, voting rights are automatically restored for most felons upon completing their sentence, but only if all court-ordered fines, fees, and restitution have been paid. This has created a significant financial barrier for many.
  • Iowa: Voting rights are not automatically restored after conviction for "infamous crimes" (most felonies). While Governor Kim Reynolds issued an executive order in 2020 restoring rights to many, those with homicide and related convictions must still apply.
  • Kentucky: Ex-felons must apply to the governor for a pardon to restore their rights.
  • Mississippi: Restoration requires a pardon from the governor or a legislative process. Those with convictions for certain crimes, like murder and rape, may be permanently disenfranchised.
  • Nebraska: Former felons must wait two years after completing their full sentence before their right to vote is automatically restored.
  • Tennessee: Individuals convicted of "infamous" crimes after 1981 are disenfranchised. In addition, people must have a pardon or a court order to restore their voting rights, and pay all restitution and court costs.
  • Virginia: Following a reversal of previous executive actions, ex-felons must petition the governor to restore their rights. Virginia is considered one of the strictest states regarding felon disenfranchisement.
  • Wyoming: Rights are automatically restored to first-time, non-violent offenders five years after completing their sentence. Others must petition the governor for a pardon.
How to get the most up-to-date information
Because these laws can change, it is best to confirm eligibility with a trusted, current source.
  • Vote.gov: The official U.S. government website provides a guide to voting after a felony conviction.
  • The Sentencing Project: This organization's reports and state briefs offer details on state-specific voting rights policies.
  • Campaign Legal Center: This group runs the website Restore Your Vote, which helps individuals determine their eligibility ba

Have some good freinds on the outside .

Tell your freinds, you love them—make sure you have a few freinds on the outside, who can visit you cemi regeualry, send you money, food (make sure they know what pepole can send for comemssary)

            Rules for prison mail;

In New York City's federal prisons, such as the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, inmates can be sent mail and commercial publications directly from a publisher or vendor

. Standard packages from friends and family are generally prohibited. All mail is subject to inspection for contraband, with legal mail being opened in the inmate's presence.

Standard written correspondence
The most reliable way to send items to a federal inmate is through letters. When sending letters, you must follow strict guidelines or the mail will be rejected.
  • Plain paper and ink: Use plain white paper and envelopes. Write with black or blue ink only.
  • Prohibited items in letters: Do not include any of the following:
    • Cash, checks, or money orders (funds must be sent to a central processing center).
    • Stickers, glitter, or musical greeting cards.
    • Polaroid photos.
    • Drawings or photos with explicit or gang-affiliated content.
  • How to address: The envelope must include the inmate's full name, registration number, and the facility's address.
Publications and educational materials
Books, magazines, and newspapers are generally allowed, but they must be brand-new and sent directly from the publisher or a reputable third-party vendor like Amazon.
  • Book restrictions: The number of books and the type of binding (softcover vs. hardcover) may be restricted, and policies vary by facility.
  • Prohibited content: Any publication that could be considered a security risk, like those that promote racism or violence, will be rejected.
Funds and commissary items
Inmates must purchase personal care items, food, and recreational clothing from the prison commissary.
  • Sending funds: You cannot send money directly to a federal prison. Instead, funds for an inmate's account must be mailed to a centralized processing center or deposited online through an approved service.
  • Prohibited food and toiletries: Home-cooked meals, perishable food, and commercially packaged food or toiletry items sent directly from family or friends are not allowed.
Special mail (legal correspondence)
Correspondence from attorneys is considered "special mail" and is handled with extra privacy.
  • Inspection procedures: Legal mail can only be opened in the inmate's presence to be inspected for contraband, not to be read.
  • Required markings: The envelope must be clearly marked "Special Mail—Open only in the presence of the inmate".
Electronic communication
Some federal facilities offer monitored electronic messaging systems, such as TRULINCS or JPay, that allow for text-only messages to be sent. These systems require approval for both the inmate and the sender and have limits on message size and attachments.
Medical and religious items
  • Medical items: Prescription eyeglasses and authorized medical devices are allowed, but they must be sent with prior written approval from the inmate's unit team.
  • Religious items: Limited religious items and publications may be permitted with prior approval

Services to be used for prison communication

        1. Prisoners primarily communicate with people outside via email through services like Corrlinks (federal prisons) and JPay or Securus Technologies (GettingOut) (various state and federal facilities), which use tablets or kiosks for message creation and delivery. Other platforms like TextBehind and Access Corrections also offer ways to send messages, which are then printed and given to the incarcerated individual.

        2. Advice in prison;

Don’t barrow money from anybody ever, espcially if you cant pay it back.

Don’t break any of the rules if they guard say rules, just follow em.

        Don’t steal (ever)

Don’t be rude to no one, you dont know who they know, or how willing they are to beat you up, teach you a lesson. Just mind your bussniss, dont let nobody drag you into crime, or gang shit, dont get involved in other pepoles bussniss, just be kind, be helpful, be nice to everybody even if they an asshole to you becuase its not worth it to be rude and talk shit behind pepoles backs, its not worth it.

Don’t talk to the guards to much, they not your freind, like cops dont be talking to cops in nyc ever unless you need to ask for directions.

You’re gonna be mad bored, make sure you got a rich inner world inside your head.

Don’t be wasting time, it’s already hard as hell to get a job its ten times harder if your a felon, or spend any time in prison.

Don’t do a damn thing that’s gonna get you sent to solitary you’ll go insane, and they can keep you there as long as they want you dont wanna risk it.

Even if everyone else is being voilent dont ever be fucking volient —-it’s not worth it to expend your stay.

If someone’s trying to rape you —-its ok to fight back, in fact thats when you scream for the guards, break the guys fucking head over the tolileit doesn’t matter if he’s 10 foot bigger then you, prison rape may be normalized in male and female prisons but that doesn’t mean you gotta take it if you dont want it just like in the real world self defense voilence is expected if sexual assault is on the line——-hold nothing back, becuase you dont know if he got aids or what, and y’all dont got lube in there—and pepole just be trying to dominate the new guy(not always but just in case) dont try to fist fight him just shove him into the wall/toleiet use the bed frame as a weapon, whatever you need to do —then make a big stink about getting a new cell mate the next day (like the one expection to TEH whole no violence rule you gotta live by)

Don’t snitch —-like if you see something funny, or even if somone do something funny to you (take your money, steal your books, throw the prison food at your face, use your room as a holding place for drugs to set you up as the fall guy (Make sure you

Keep a diary

Make freinds, your gonna be there a while (find guys who wanna protect you, have your back, but also ones who aren’t too hard/not gang members—dont join the aryan brotherhood this ain’t amercian history x you dont need or want to be spending your whole prison stay getting branded with swayscstcas and being pressured to be racist —-there are lots of pepole in prison —-treat it like summer camp, you dont always know someone is an asshole until you already been freinds for weeks—-eventually you’ll make some freinds on the inside just spend all your time with them in the yard, —-talk about ur life on the outside as much as you can it gives you direction, keeps morale up.

Don’t get into drugs (not selling, not doing —stay away)

Make sure they follow the law; and dont mistreat you (they probably will) but most prisoners dont know the law so make sure you memorize what they can and cant legally do to you.

You gotta get your medicine (correct pills, and hormones —or whatever it is you were taking before you got setanced.

Make sure you keep up hygiene habits —it can seem pointless but it gives you that normalcy.

save up money all month for your monthly trip to TEH store and your daily/weekly trips to cometary —-dont be spending money on anything but what you need, like books, and actually good food, ect.

hey…if you got like a 10 year sentence…and you had a girlfriend who since left you when you got senstanced —-or maybe you were single but you wanted a girlfriend ——its ok, to go gay for TEH stay —its ok, no one thinks it counts, besides your only human, you need connection—-you dont HAVE to have sex, you can just you know…if you find somebody that like you like that espcially if you get them as your cell mate (hey you’d be lucky man I couldn’t even get a collage Roomate to fuck me but—-hey) Hey…just make sure you know the guy dont got aids, or any STD, prisons have testing clinics so you can find out faster then irl, actully, and make sure he not playing you and…make sure he somone you would have if your straight…at least been freinds with on the outside.

1. Plan for life on the outside its already so hard to get a job now, it’s gonna be 10x harder once you have a crinmal record, and in some states you wont even be able to vote anymore, read a lot study a lot, go to groups, find a ex con sopport group —tell your freinds on the outside —get them to help you find a reaiable side hustle some other options for making money thats not a trsidisonal job.

Do some shit to like take your mind off prison, get a pen pal, get into RELGION, (spend a lot of time with the prison Chaplin) Spend a lot of time in the computer lab, write a book (you know I did that before, was in a phyc ward for three months in Utah and I wrote a book in that time its called NUMB a year later I finished it) Or join the prison theatre troop RTA (The real life one the movie sing sing was about)

    More prison advice;

worry about you

Pretend your in orange is the new black or i love you Phillip morris (not oz that’s not fun)

Make it clear they cant fuck with you but dont ever try an intimate nobody just dont act or seem weak, be kind and genuine but not a pushover.

Some important basic shit; long term plans.

1. If you know you did the crime, and you’ve already gone to trail and been sentenced, there’s not much you can do. But hunker down—and eventually tall to your lawyer about appeals and trying to drop the charges if possible. And start planning for your parrol hearing.

—-if you know your mental illness was such so involved in being the reason you committed the crime, and you should have gotten an insanity plea—-if you want to attempt to get a mistrial/re trail…you need to get a good lawyer and in that case you need to try and get a retail to get an insanity plea;

—-even more important if you definitely know for a fact you didn’t do the crime ur being framed, profiled whatever it is——there’s hope—-contact the innocence project get them to look at your case and try to get them to re open your case and get you out of prison becuase your innocent.
