FREE MOVIES: (How to watch movies for free both in theatres, and online, keep up with movies, festivals, upcoming films, film festivals list, $1 movie days when and where they are, how to get free movie tickets, etc.

FREE MOVIES (watching, making, and everything in between in NYC for free)

Table of Contents;

Lots of people love going to the movies, it’s a time honored tradition for all walks of life.

But nowadays AMC or Regal tickets are close to $25 for adults and not much less for children and seniors.

Even indie theaters are often still 20 dollars for single tickets, such as IFC, Angelika, The Roxy, and Alamo Drafthouse. Not to mention most film festivals like Film Forum, Tribeca Festival, and even smaller film festivals in NYC, can be very expensive to attend. This is to say nothing of bigger film festivals like TIFF, Sundance, Cannes, and Venice all of which plus travel for most New Yorkers, is far too expensive to attend on your own dime.

So, you wanna be an avid film goer, you love going to the movie theater, but you can’t afford it anymore, don't fear! There are tons of free opportunities in NYC to watch movies for free, both in theaters, at festivals, and at home (on a TV or computer.) I will also go over remaining NYC video stores, the case to not get rid of your DVDs and continue to be a DVD collector and watcher —-how to get free DVD players, DVDs, and how to, yes, pirate movies online —-free streaming services and more.

How to use Letterboxd and likewise make a wishlist of films you want to see, your favorite films list, write and post public reviews and more, how to support NYC filmmakers and how to make your own independent film in NYC on a budget, —-and submit to film festivals (the cheaper ones since it costs money to submit to NYC film festivals)

Yearly film award shows to keep up with, not just the Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes, but also the SAG awards and more.

Film Critics of various marginalized background to actually trust

How to get into foreign films, read subtitles, and find dubs easily (make your own dubs of films in any language )

Film studios to support and look out for making great original cinema (A24, SpindleHorse, Breaking Glass pictures, Wolf pictures, Indian paintbrush, etc.)

What film studios to look out for/ignore at all costs —consecutive propaganda masquerading as film-making.

How to be an Educated /Discerning Film Goer, for Free;

Letterboxd, keeping track of your favorite movies, of upcoming films, track productions and what’s in festivals -coming out when, where to get actually reliable unbiased/paid off reviews online, how to become a film critic yourself, what film studios /directors/working today are worth supporting both artistically and morally, and which ones and ones you should avoid.
List of morally bankrupt/canceled people working in the film world today —to make sure to not support their films with your money and fanfare.

So it may seem like no movies are good anymore, and you never can know what movies currently playing are good —it may be hard to know what’s coming out until it’s already out of theaters. It may seem like Hollywood's gone back to the time of the Hays Code, with hardly any marginalized voices. Genuinely heartfelt and good and investigative and boundary breaking films fall by the wayside to make way for endless Christian slop, and conservative propaganda. Well never fear, good movies are coming out, you just need to know where to find them, and see them because sadly they don't get the wide releases and marketing budgets of superhero movies and big budget horror or action franchise movies so I'm gonna show you how to find and support great art coming out now and enrich and enjoy your movie going experience again.

If you’re a film buff or a movie causal fan who wants to get more into movies, here’s a great place to start: Getting in touch with your own movie tastes instead of just going along with the popular Netflix slop viral film of the week, and giving your watching habits over to the algorithm. Take back that power, and reconstruct your tastes as a discerning adult, and to do this and make it more official, and easier to remember and refer back to if you forget —-

Make Long and Detailed Movie Lists

1. Watchlists (movies you want to watch in the near future (movies that area already out/older films from your childhood, films you’ve seen last few years to give your watching plans some kind of shape, think of it like a movie To-Watch-list)

2. Favorites list (like playlists of music, make lists of your favorite movies, in different categories such as favorite sad movies, favorite feel good films, etc)

Free rescocres for nyc filmakers just starting out

(Screenwriting, Film editing/special effects, production, Actors, film festivals, opunties for new directors and filmakers)

Questions to ask yourself before you make your movie;

1.  Budget - How much can I afford to set aside for the budget for the things that WILL cost money (paying actors if their not just your freinds, possibly paying location fees for certain locations, submitting to film festivals, paying for editing services, costumes, special effects and music—-) I recommend making it 500$ to start, (save some for promotion when ur done its more important then you think) save up your packechecks, but despite my tips to alloow you to cut as many corners and pay as little as possible, you will still over time need to spend a couple hundred AT LEAST, by the end. Don’t be afraid to beg, ask freinds and family for money, make a go fund me/kickstarter for TEH film if your not an influencer dm bigger creators to preomote it in enxtange for a small role in it or something like that —

2. Is this a story I want to tell, a work of art I believe in with my whole soul and will fight to the bloody end till it’s complete? Or do I just wanna make a movie for movies sake.

3. Who is this movie for? Your traumatized younger self, the outcasts, gays and girls, the misunderstood dudes, artsy film critics, or is it for everyone.

4. Am I the best person to tell this story (will I need a sensitivity reader later on, should I collaborate with someone from the marglized group I want to put front and center, to make sure i get it right)

5. Has this story been told before, what makes my version different?

6. DO i want my story to be timless, or commenting on our current political climate and bring awareness to my bold, underserved, ignored perspective and do I want to risk backlash, polarization, and possible boycotts and censorship if my message speaks too much truth to power?

7. Does this story have a harmful message, is it to nauanced and likely to be taken the wrong way? What will this movie influence pepole to think and do. Is that response untimely one that benefits art and society then one that doesn’t.

8. Is my movie gonna be a spiffic parody or genre motif, what genre is my movie? Is it a subversion or simply part of that genre.

9. What story —-would impact pepole (remember above all you dont want to be boring like far too many pepole these days,

11. Film is a visual medium, what aesthetic, fashion, and overall style and vibe is my movie going for? Are there any cool or unique shots im picturing in my head that I think I can pull off, that HAVE to be in the movie and would stick in peoples minds. (And highlight rathen then dirract from the plot/messages)

10. Is this story more focused on the plot, the charchtwrs or the setting?

Step one; 1. Screenwriting;

Basic screenwriting advice for beginners;

1. If your dyslexic (or even if your not) don't take any chance with typos, or grammatical errors, when completely finished — send your script to a good editor (options for free and cheapest possible editing services)

            1. find friend who’s willing to edit your whole screenplay (who you know has solid spelling and grammar chops and knows script format/will respect that format when editing.

        2. Free beta editing services;

—-Ask your college professor , parrents/reltives/family freinds, your mentor if they are professors or editors to do you a solid, and give it a pass, even if they have to do it in little chunks over time——

—-Go to writing center at your university, or your freinds university, and lie that its a school assignment and need feedback and edits before a deadline, even if your not a creative writing majority/or film student: Some of the best writing centers that do editing for you and give you feedback during your sessions; /https://inside.manhattan.edu/academic-resources/center-for-academic-success/writing-center/index.php

        3. Editing services that cost $100-

Editors I would personally recommend; That have helped me and my writing a lot over the years (Arugubly more then many of my creative writing professors) That offer personal workshops (full edits they will give you on their own/feedback with you on zoom once a month for a set time often at very low/good prices)

Part 2 – Freytag's Pyramid

Part 3 – The Hero's Journey

Part 6 – The Fichtean Curve

Part 8 – The 7-Point Story Structure

The 15 steps of Save the Cat

Since Snyder’s sheet was originally created for screenwriting, the bracketed number by each beat is the page or pages that it would take up of a standard 110-page screenplay. The beats are as follows:

  1. Opening Image [1]: An opening snapshot.
  2. Theme Stated [5]: We are introduced to the central theme or lesson of the story.
  3. Set Up [1-10]: The hero and the 'ordinary world' are introduced.
  4. Catalyst [12]: Something happens that sets the story in motion.
  5. Debate [12-25]: The hero is hesitant to take action.
  6. Break Into Two [25]: The hero takes up the challenge.
  7. B Story [30]: The subplot kicks in, introducing a character who helps the hero in their transformation.
  8. Fun and Games [30-55]: The hero in the throes of their challenge or journey.
  9. Midpoint [55]: The stakes are raised.
  10. Bad Guys Close In [55-75]: Things start going downhill for the hero.
  11. All is Lost [75]: Things go from bad to worse. The hero hits rock bottom.
  12. Dark Night of the Soul [75-85]: Faced with defeat, the hero must reckon with their loss and how they got there.
  13. Break Into Three [85]: The hero realizes a truth that’s been evading them all this time.
  14. Finale [85-110]: Putting their new awareness into action, the hero conquers the bad guys.
  15. Final Image [110]: A snapshot that mirrors or contrasts the opening image.

Hollywood agents and Producers who are accepting direct script submissions;

(If you want money for your film and can’t finance your gonna need to find yourself a producer —though this free nyc guide, is meant for self funded indpdent filmmaking so you can do it yourself without waiting for producers approval to make the film itself if it does well maybe you can get a  producer for your next film, but lets not let ahead of ourselves, —-but yeah feeel free to submit your script to producers anyway, but don’t let that slow down your own production process)

List of producers, and screenwriting agents to submit to (once you start production, and want to throw your ring in the hat for a small chance of your script being bought and produced by actual Hollywood budget —-but dont get your hopes up—dont the possibility of getting more money and legitimacy distract or define your self funded production)

(Just so you know im focusing on narrative filmmaking with this free stuff guide, —-Not documentary, or animated films Ill have a  little addendum at the end for advice on how to do those kinds of films on a budget)

Step 2. actors

Now that you have your finished *screenplay and your budget all saved up and divided up.

*To print screenplay for free, especially more then one copy to give to you and your future production assistant/co director. —-        Don’t go to libarary or staples where they charge you for especially big prints to print at least three copies of your screen play for free; ( most screenplays aren’t more then 90 pages for feature length 1 hour films)

1. Go to The Center that does free printing with no page limits. FOR FREE

2. Invest for future (forever) free prints in your own control, by buying a cheap black n white printer/enough printer paper for all scripts (cheapest printer you can buy; https://share.temu.com/g1mKeerI2RC (this is the one I have and it works great)

Make your schedule (how long with it take to film your movie!) Aim for a week, but that depends on various factors, weather cetain locations, casts avaublity ect

Make your shot list ; https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/shot-list-template-free-download/

Prepare equipment, costumes, props, (plan if you need to do a scene on green screen ahead of time) whatever you think you will need for spiffic scenes, charchtwrs and shots —ahead of time.

Rent free expsive film camera; https://www.nyc.gov/site/mome/industries/camera-grip-lighting.page

https://motionpicturerentals.com/35mm-camera-rental-nyc/

Clear all storage on your phone, delete all apps, to prepare to film the movie on your iPhone —learn from the Susan baker playbook;

(Get solid/flesxible try pod, make sure phone storage is empty you will need it for all the footage)

https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/how-to-make-a-movie-on-iphone/

https://nofilmschool.com/feature-on-iphone-guest

https://www.learnaboutfilm.com/making-a-film/iphone-filmmaking/

Now its time to cast your movie;

first i would recommend asking your freinds in film school, who are YouTubers or have any presumed experience in any nectary roles, to come on becuase they wont expect you to pay them and you already have a. Report. Only the basic casting roles since your on a very low budget and are gonna get creative go get around that and have the story be so good they will look past the low budget.

(Again try to cast your freinds, ask around for cast and crew in the following roles)

Key Casting & Creative Roles
  • Responsible for the film's artistic vision and guiding actors and crew to bring the story to life on screen.
  • Producer: (you)
    Manages the overall production from start to finish, including hiring, budgeting, and overseeing operations.
  • Executive Producer: (also You)
    Typically the financier of the film, providing the necessary funds and support.
  • Writer (Screenwriter): (you again…your gonna have your name all over the credits )
    Crafts the story and writes the screenplay that forms the foundation of the film.
  • Finds and selects actors to play the roles in the film through auditions.
  • The main actors who portray the central characters in the film.
  • Actors who play significant roles that add depth and complexity to the narrative.
  • Extras (Background Artists):
    People who fill out the scenes, creating believable and immersive environments for the audience.

    Supporting Crew & Department Roles

If You are writer and director, and casting director….and producer, and you can’t find anyone to be your cinmitropher, editor or pepole you can’t find anyone to fill the main crew roles —-from asking your freinds alone, now its time too;

Hire some pepole !!! (For as cheap as possible)

1. Hire best (cheapest) film editor;
